Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes Russia will step up its attacks this week as European Union leaders ponder whether to allow Ukraine to join the bloc.

Moscow has made repeated threats against allowing Ukraine to join the EU, but Western leaders have been largely supportive of the offer.

In his final speech last night, Zelenskyy said: "Obviously, this week we should expect Russia to intensify its hostile activities. We are preparing. We are ready."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that he had "nothing against" Ukraine's application, but that Ukraine's embrace of the EU would interfere with Moscow's intentions to keep its neighbor out of Western sphere of influence.

EU leaders will consider Ukraine's bid at a summit on Thursday and Friday, but the EU executive - the European Commission - has recommended that it continue. However, the process itself can take many years to complete.
