Rubio criticized for "masked tyranny," Germany defends AfD's

Germany's Foreign Ministry has defended its decision to classify the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as far-right, following harsh criticism from the White House.

US Vice President JD Vance accused "bureaucrats" of rebuilding the Berlin Wall, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized this designation as "masked tyranny."

In an unusual move, the State Department responded directly to Rubio on X, writing: “We have learned from our history that right-wing extremism must stop.”

The intelligence agency that conducted the classification found that the AfD's "dominant understanding of people based on ethnicity and background" goes against Germany's "free democratic order."
