As he accepted an honorary lifetime achievement award at the Spanish Academy's Goya Awards on Saturday night, Richard Gere attacked President Donald Trump, calling him a "bully and a thug."

On stage at the Palacio de Congresos de Granada, surrounded by Antonio Banderas, who presented him with the award, Gere chose to express his dissatisfaction with some of the changes he has noticed in the world.

“[I see] this very stupid tribalism starting to take over us, where we think we are all separate from each other. We have, unfortunately, elected officials who do not inspire us in the way we want to be inspired,” he said.

"We are in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully and a thug who is the president of the United States," he continued, pausing to allow most of the crowd to applaud loudly.

"But it's not just in the US, it's everywhere," he warned, adding, "We have to be vigilant."

Gere's comments Saturday night echoed sentiments he shared Friday during a press conference before the awards.

"America is experiencing a dark time and it is time for the people to stand up. We must be vigilant against this dark marriage of money and power. It is irresponsible and corrosive to have millionaires at the helm of the United States, [it is] a danger to the entire planet," he declared.

"The millionaire clowns surrounding Trump are immature and narcissistic, a deadly mix," he warned.
