A county in eastern China is offering couples a 1,000 yuan ($137) bounty if the bride is 25 or younger, the latest move to encourage young people to marry amid growing concerns about a declining birth rate.
The notice, which was posted on Changshan County's official Wechat account last week, said the reward was to promote age-appropriate marriage and childbearing. It also included a range of childcare, fertility and education subsidies for couples with children.
Worried about China's first population decline in six decades and its rapidly aging population, authorities are urgently trying a series of measures to boost the birth rate, including financial incentives and improved childcare facilities, write foreign media.
China's legal age for marriage is 22 for men and 20 for women, but the number of couples getting married has been falling. This has reduced birth rates due to official policies that make it harder for single women to have children.
The marriage rate hit a record low in 2022 at 6.8 million, the lowest since 1986, according to government data released in June. There were 800,000 fewer marriages last year than in 2021.
