UNUSUAL/ An 8 cm worm is found in the brain of a woman in England

A woman who had been experiencing forgetfulness and depression for a long time had an 8-centimeter-long parasitic worm removed from her brain.

The woman is a 64-year-old English woman who lives in News South Wales, Australia.

She was hospitalized in January 2021 after suffering from abdominal pain, diarrhea, dry cough and night sweats for three weeks.

By 2022 her symptoms had evolved and she was dealing with depression and forgetfulness, prompting doctors to send her to a Canberra hospital.

Surgery became the only option and doctors successfully removed the roundworm, which was 8cm (80mm) in length and 1mm in diameter.

Identified as a third-stage larva of the nematode species Ophidascaris robertsi, the case is unprecedented in medical history and is documented in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

This parasitic worm usually lives in the digestive tract of carpet pythons native to the Australian state of New South Wales.

Medical professionals suspect that the woman accidentally ingested the worm's eggs by eating edible herbs that were contaminated with snake feces, however the actual cause cannot be confirmed.

After the eggs hatched inside her body, doctors believe the larvae began a journey to her brain. This could have been affected by the medication she was taking, which compromised her immune system.
