Russian forces have intensified their offensive on the strategic city of Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine, a key point for control of the Donbas region.
According to Ukrainian soldiers quoted by the BBC, the city has practically become a "gray zone", where neither side has full control.
Ukrainian soldiers on the ground report that Russian troops have penetrated several areas of the city and are trying to surround it from several directions.
Kostiantynivka is considered the gateway to the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, the last Ukrainian strongholds in Donbas.
Russian authorities claim their units are advancing rapidly and have surrounded Ukrainian forces in parts of the city. These claims are denied by Kiev.
The commander of the 19th Ukrainian Corps, Brigadier General Oleksandr Bakulin, stated that the situation remains under control and that the enemy has not achieved decisive successes, although he acknowledged that about 130 Russian soldiers are still inside the city.
According to Ukrainian officers, the fighting is taking place house-to-house, with buildings and trees providing cover for Russian forces to hide from Ukrainian drones. At the same time, Russian drones are striking Ukrainian positions and drone launch bases, making it difficult to defend the city.
A Ukrainian drone pilot described the situation as a “major crisis,” warning that a lack of personnel and reinforcements was making it increasingly difficult to hold the front lines. He said Russian forces were advancing gradually, sometimes just a few dozen meters a day, but without interruption.
Military experts estimate that if Kostiantynivka falls, Russia will be able to advance towards Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, moving closer to the Kremlin's strategic goal of fully taking over the Donbas region.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has continued attacks on Russian oil refineries and supply lines, including those connecting Russia to occupied Crimea, causing fuel shortages in some areas. However, the developments in Kostiantynivka show that the eastern front remains one of the hottest spots in the war.
