Anti-mafia prosecutor executed during honeymoon

A senior Paraguayan prosecutor who fought organized crime in his country has been shot dead during his honeymoon in Colombia. Marcelo Pecci was on a beach on the tourist island of Baru when he was killed by two gunmen.

Hours before the execution, Peci's wife had announced on Instagram that she was pregnant.

Paraguay President Mario Abdo Benitez described the execution as an 'act of cowardice'.

Pecci's wife journalist Claudia Aguilera testified that two men approached her on a private beach before her husband was shot. She said they had not received any threats before.

"Two men attacked Marcelo. They came in a small boat, or a jet ski. I'm not sure I saw him well," she told The El Tiempo newspaper.

"One of the attackers came out and without any warning he shot Marcelo twice, one bullet hit him in the face and another in the back," she said.

The Decameron Hotel, where the couple was staying, said in a statement that "the killers arrived on the beach and attacked and killed one of his clients."

Paraguayan prosecutor Augusto Salas, a colleague of Marcelo Peci's, said the attack seemed "typical of the drug mafia". The head of the Colombian police and investigators from Paraguay have analysed the scene.

Officials from the United States will also help the investigation, Colombia's national police chief General Jorge Luis Vargas said.

Pecci specialised in the fight against organised crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism financing. .

In 2020 he worked on a case against former Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho, who was arrested trying to enter Paraguay on a fake Paraguayan passport.

"The cowardly murder of prosecutor Marcelo Pecci in Colombia saddens the entire Paraguayan nation," Paraguayan President Mario Abdo wrote on Twitter.
