President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador vowed Friday to work together to tackle the illegal trafficking of fentanyl to the United States and manage the growing number of migrants traveling north to crossed the border on foot.

"Nothing is beyond our reach, in my opinion, if Mexico and the United States stand together and work together," President Biden said.

The relationship between Presidents Biden and López Obrador has been strained, in part because of President Biden's criticism of Mexico on topics such as fentanyl production and the killing of journalists. And President López Obrador has also not hesitated to criticize the American leader. He did not attend a high-level meeting in Los Angeles last year where leaders addressed the issue of immigration, as the United States did not invite Cuba, Nicaragua, or Venezuela. He also initially said he would not attend this year's APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) conference, but later changed his mind.

They appeared with smiles and compliments before reporters on Friday, as President Biden told President López Obrador that: "I couldn't have a better partner than you" and as the Mexican leader called President Biden a "good man" and an "extraordinary president".

They were in San Francisco for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, where President Biden has had a series of one-on-one meetings with other leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and the leaders of Japan and South Korea, as he tries to secure the region that the United States and China are competitors, but not in a lose-lose rivalry.

Presidents Biden and Lopez Obrador discussed immigration as the United States tries to manage a growing number of people crossing the southern border.

They also discussed the deadly fentanyl traffic, especially after President Biden secured an agreement with Chinese President Xi to curb this illegal opioid. Mexico and China are the main sources for synthetic fentanyl trafficked into the United States. Almost all the chemicals needed to produce it come from China. The drug is then mass produced in Mexico and trafficked through the cartels to the United States.

The issues of fentanyl and immigration are intertwined. Human trafficking across the border is part of the cartels' operations, which also include drug trafficking into the United States.

Fentanyl is already the deadliest drug in the United States. More than 100,000 deaths per year are related to drug overdoses as of 2020, and about two-thirds of them are related to fentanyl. VOA
