Helsiniki announced on Thursday that it will close four of the eight border crossings with Russia over the weekend because of a surge in asylum seekers.

Finland's Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has said Russia is seeking to destabilize his country after deciding to join NATO earlier this year.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke to Orpon on Thursday and said Russia's "instrumentalisation of migrants" was "shameful".

European Union spokesman Christian Wigand said on Friday that Brussels had seen a surge in undeploited asylum seekers from the Russian Federation in Finland.

"We are closely following the situation. We are in contact with the Finnish authorities and the Finnish border guard," he said.

Helsinki's ties with Moscow have deteriorated since Russia's war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

This prompted Finland to abandon its neutral stance and join NATO to increase its security.

The Nordic country shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia.

In September, 280 asylum seekers were reported to have been in Finland.

Brussels has in the past accused Russia-allied Belarus of urging thousands of undecumented migrants to cross the border with Poland and Lithuania in retaliation for the bloc's sanctions.

Poland accused Russia and Belarus of orchestrating the new migration influx in August.
