The West is already embroiled in World War III with Russia but hasn't noticed, former White House Russia adviser Fiona Hill told the New Yorker.

Hill, one of the world's leading experts on Vladimir Putin's Russia, discussed the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine's western allies. Last week, Putin threatened the West with veiled threats of nuclear weapons as the Kremlin held referendums, widely denounced as fakes, in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine it seeks to annex.

"We've been at this for a long time and we've failed to recognize it," Hill said.

Hill alluded to the fact that the US has supported Ukraine with military aid since the Maidan revolution of 2014. This led to Russia's seizure of parts of eastern Ukraine, the annexation of Crimea and a protracted conflict. Russia and the US have also faced each other on opposing sides of the Syrian civil war. The Kremlin has launched covert campaigns to subvert Western elections and exacerbate domestic tensions.

Putin's warning came after heavy battlefield losses and military setbacks for Russia, with Ukraine recently seizing control of 2,320 square miles of territory from Russia. The defeat has prompted Putin to enlist thousands of civilians and reservists in the Russian army and consolidate its control of territory in the Donbass region through referendums.

Hill addressed the potential for conflict to spiral out of control due to the failure of opposing parties to read each other's intentions.

"The problem is, of course, that we misread him, but he also misreads us," Hill noted.

Hill served as an adviser to the Trump administration and has been critical of the former president's policies toward Russia and Ukraine, which she claimed emboldened Putin.
