Vadym Shepelenko is a professor of biochemistry at the University of Dnipro. 45 years old and far from a fanatical nationalist, he is the deputy commander of the 128th Infantry Brigade, centered in Vilika-Novasilka, one of the key sectors for Ukraine's hopes of liberating the occupied territories, located between the southern region of Zaporizhia and to the eastern one of Donbass. If possible, he would have returned to the laboratories and to his students. But he joined the war from the beginning. In 2014, he volunteered to protect Donbass from Moscow's intentions: "I didn't like delegating the future of our country to others."
Corriere della Sera conducted an interview with him in the hospital. He says that among the ranks of Ukrainian soldiers there are many dissatisfied with NATO training, whose manuals, according to them, are outdated and the approach is far from the reality on the ground.
Major, none of your soldiers or friends think it's time to seek a deal with Putin, aren't you tired of so many dead and wounded?
It is true that every day we see dead and wounded, it is a difficult war, which has been going on for a long time. But I can assure you that no one, as far as I know, is willing to give up our land in exchange for a peace that, in any case, would be false and temporary.
Does anyone talk about this at the hospital?
I have not heard it said neither among the seriously wounded, nor by the war invalids themselves or by their families. We know the Russians well, we speak their language, we know how they think and we know very well that Putin has not lost his popularity by deciding to attack us. On the contrary, it probably enjoys more support today than before. And this awareness makes us understand that we have no alternative: we must fight, with all our strength, until victory. Far be it from a Putin victory: he would immediately threaten the Baltic countries and Poland. If, on the other hand, an armistice were unfortunately reached, it would be only a parenthesis. This would give the Russians time to regroup and then they would attack even harder than before. I think we Ukrainians would win if there was a second round. Then it would be you of NATO who would have to fight. That's why you should support us now, without delay, we are fighting for you.
Are you satisfied with the training you receive from NATO to help your counteroffensive?
I haven't done it. But among my fellow soldiers, those who have attended the courses are not happy. They say that they only serve to teach the direction of the tools that are given to us. NATO's manuals are outdated, they do not respond to the needs of this war. Their instructors should come to the battlefields of Ukraine, then they will understand that this is a completely new conflict.
Zelensky is considering holding elections next year. What do you think?
I disagree. First, we must end the war.
When do you think you can liberate Mariupol?
This depends on the help of allies, probably within the next year.
So peace is far?
There are sectors of the front that have been stuck for months. The Russians are not to be underestimated, I'm tired of saying they are demoralized, I don't see it, they have learned to use drones very well and have a lot more than us. I am sure of our victory, it will come, but certainly not now, it will take time. I do not rule out that Putin, with his back against the wall, will choose to bomb the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. So it will not use tactical atomic bombs: they are not necessary and China will prevent it.
