Online fraud, mainly targeting the elderly has become a way to make money from dozens of individuals hiding behind fake accounts.
A 60-year-old woman from Milan, named Sylvie, has faced such a situation, who has fallen into debt and lost 200,000 euros after falling in love with an "American soldier" on social networks.
It all started for Sylvie when she received a Messenger message from a stranger named Eric, who claimed to be an American soldier serving in Syria.
" I didn't answer immediately, because I didn't know him. About two months later I reopened the Facebook conversation and that message was still there. Driven by curiosity, I answered. He wrote to me and said he was in Idlib, one of the most dangerous areas in Syria.
Our bond began to grow stronger as he told me he was an orphan, adopted by a family and alone in the world. He explained to me that he was tired of working in Syria, he wanted to leave and meet a woman with whom he could spend the rest of his life ", the 60-year-old Italian confesses.
According to Sylvie, Eric's profile looked real as there were pictures of him in uniform and other everyday activities. This pushed the old Italian woman to have blind faith in the "American soldier" and fall in love with him.
"He understood my feelings, my mood. He had the same passions as me, the same ideas. A harmony was created between us that I had never experienced with other men. It made me feel good," says Sylvie.
The emotional addiction it created led the 60-year-old to trust the fraudsters behind Eric's profile, who realized she had fallen into the trap and started demanding money.
“Eric told me that he has been asked to participate in a particularly dangerous mission. He was scared and wanted to flee Syria. He needed my help. He told me that after a fight with ISIS rebels, he had found a suitcase full of dollars in an abandoned truck. He told me he managed to get it to Istanbul and hid it in a United Nations warehouse. We should accept that with all that money we can live a happy life together, he told me. I was hypnotized and believed everything he told me," reveals Sylvie.
After this communication, the 60-year-old woman started making payments to enable the removal of the suitcase from the UN warehouse, initially sending 4,700 euros to the fraudsters.
"In my heart I knew something was wrong, but Eric was very persuasive," she says.
Since that moment, she has continuously sent money for the issuance of various certificates necessary for unlocking the suitcase, for anti-terrorism documents, or certifications to prevent its opening and checking.
“For every transfer made, I was issued a regular invoice and sent proof that I had paid for it, so I could trust that everything was real. I was between two fires, on the one hand Eric was begging me to help him and on the other hand the managers of this company who were constantly asking for money", Sylvie confesses.
After 200 thousand euros of payment, the suitcase arrived in Italy and Sylvie asked to take it.
"They gave me an appointment at the Aversa station. Here two black men showed me a suitcase full of dollars. However, there was a problem as all the banknotes had a seal of the United Nations. They told me that the liquid to remove the seal is very expensive and they asked me for money to buy it. They told me that they would clear all the notes and then deliver them to my home.”
After taking the bait of two bills accepted at the bank, Sylvie proceeds to pay for the liquid that will clean all the bills.
"They made me place an order with an Austrian company. I got the bill, but for one reason or another the liquid didn't come and I gave even more money."
Then the fraudsters made the 60-year-old believe that it was necessary to buy the machine to clean the banknotes, and here she distributed thousands of euros in cash.
"The fact is that these people had started to make me fear that if the police found the suitcase, I could get into trouble, since my name was on all the transport documents, not to mention the expenses that I also took out two loans."
Desperate and penniless, Sylvie finds the real American soldier living in the US whose photos match the fake Eric's while searching social media.
His answer was shocking, as he tells her that his photos were stolen by a bunch of online fraudsters. She ended up in the hands of a gang of criminals dedicated to scams related to romantic relationships.
" They took my mind, scared me and continue to threaten me to this day. I lost 200 thousand euros and to pay off the debts I had to put the house up for sale ", says the 60-year-old.
