Socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire has won the race in Paris, succeeding Anne Hidalgo as mayor of the French capital, according to the results of the latest round of municipal elections.
The results also show clear victories for the traditional left and right, as well as a significant victory for the far right in the city of Nice on the French Riviera.
French citizens voted in around 1,500 municipalities, in a process considered a test of the balance of forces on the local political scene, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The final results were still not fully confirmed by evening, especially in the larger cities. However, around 93% of small and medium-sized municipalities had elected their mayors in the first round.
In Paris, Grégoire, who led a coalition of the traditional left, the Greens and the Communists, declared victory after preliminary results put him ahead of his right-wing rival, Rachida Dati, who conceded defeat.
He declared that the victory represented "a vision for a progressive and vibrant Paris," adding that the citizens of the capital had clearly chosen the left. Paris has been run by left-wing forces for about 25 years.
Meanwhile, in Nice, candidate Eric Ciotti, a former conservative with ties to the far-right, scored a significant victory for the political camp. However, Marine Le Pen's party lost in several other key cities, including Marseille, where the incumbent leftist mayor Benoit Payan managed to retain his mandate.
The far right also lost in cities like Nîmes and Toulon, despite their expectations.
However, the president of the far-right party, Jordan Bardella, described the result as an important success for his political force, emphasizing that this is a step forward in the local elections.
The race has also been closely watched in other major cities, such as Le Havre, where incumbent mayor Édouard Philippe won a new term, strengthening his position as one of the potential figures for the upcoming presidential election.
Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron's centrist movement achieved a significant result only in the city of Bordeaux, while in many other areas it remained in the background.
The elections took place against a tense international backdrop, amid the war in Ukraine, Gaza and the Middle East, adding to the uncertainty about political developments in France ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
