US President Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen very soon, while he did not rule out the possibility that it will be jointly controlled by the United States and Iran.
In a statement to CNN, Trump said that the reopening of this strategic sea route depends on the progress of negotiations between the two countries.
"It will open very soon," he said, adding that if talks continue positively, an agreement for joint control could be reached.
"It will be jointly controlled... me and the ayatollah, whoever the next ayatollah is," Trump declared.
The US president also spoke about political developments in Iran, suggesting that a regime change is already underway.
"There will be a very serious form of regime change... in a way, it has already happened," he said, referring to the attacks that, according to him, have hit senior Iranian leaders.
Trump added that talks held over the weekend have given positive signals for reducing tensions.
"We are dealing with people who I consider very reasonable and stable," he said, hinting that there are figures within Iran who could play a key role in a possible agreement.
Iran insists again: There are no negotiations with the US
Iran has denied holding negotiations with the United States, stressing that its positions have not changed. According to a Foreign Ministry spokesman, messages have been exchanged through third countries, but without direct talks.
Tehran has warned that any attack on its vital infrastructure will have serious consequences. Iranian authorities emphasize that they will respond immediately and decisively to any threat.
