A powerful explosion followed by secondary explosions occurred at the 51st arsenal of the Russian Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) in the Vladimir region, various sources reported on Tuesday.

The depot, a large facility within Russia's defense infrastructure, is said to store more than 100,000 tons of ammunition, including artillery shells, multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) missiles, air defense components, and short-range ballistic missiles.

Local sources and social media accounts have spread unconfirmed reports suggesting a possible “missile strike” originating from Ukraine. Alexander Avdeyev, the governor of the Vladimir region, confirmed the explosion but did not provide details. The governor wrote on his Telegram profile that sharing photos and video footage of the incident is punishable by law.

According to eyewitnesses, several villages near the ammunition depot are being evacuated due to the continuous explosions. The state news agency TASS officially confirmed the evacuation for the village of Barsovo. It is still not known what caused the first explosion and then the others. However, Ukraine has repeatedly used drones to attack Russian ammunition depots in defense against a full-scale Russian invasion.

The ammunition depot is one of the largest in the Russian armed forces. It is located more than 500 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

As reported, before the explosion, a large fire broke out at the scene. The extent of the damage and possible casualties remain unclear at the moment. According to some sources, the evacuation of the population from the surrounding areas has begun. Images and photos of a large cloud of smoke that can be seen above the warehouse, and explosions can be heard, have appeared on the Internet.

The 51st GRAU Arsenal plays a key role in the Russian logistics chain for supplying the ground forces with a wide range of conventional ammunition. The loss or disruption of such a facility could impact operational capabilities, especially as Russia continues to conduct large-scale military operations.
