Pope Francis' last words: Thank you for bringing me back to the Square

"Thank you for bringing me back to the Square." Among Pope Francis' last words was gratitude for those who, during his illness, and even long before, followed him every step of the way, never tiring. Especially for Massimiliano Strappetti, the nurse who - as he once said - saved his life by advising him to undergo colon surgery and whom the Pope later appointed as his health aide throughout his recovery in 2022.

By his side during the 38 days of hospitalization at the Gemelli Polyclinic and twenty-four hours during the rest at Santa Marta, Strappetti was also with the Pope on Easter Sunday, during the Urbi et Orbi. The day before, they had gone to St. Peter's Basilica to review the "path" they had to take the next day, when Francis would then descend from the Benediction Loggia of the Vatican Basilica.

Embracing the crowd

After that moment, on Sunday morning, on the balcony at the heart of the facade of the Vatican Basilica, when the initial 35,000 faithful had already become 50,000, the Pope wanted to give them one last, significant surprise, by going to St. Peter's Square for a ride in the popemobile.

With fear at first: “Do you think I can do it?” he asked Strappetti, who calmed him down. From there, the hug with the crowd and especially with the children: the first ride after leaving Gemelli, the last of his life.

Tired but happy, the Pope thanked his personal health aide: “Thank you for bringing me back to the Square.” Words that reveal the need for the Argentine Pope – who made direct human contact his hallmark – to return once again to the people.

The last hours

Pope Francis, then, after resting in the afternoon, had a quiet dinner. Around 5.30 in the morning, the first signs of illness appeared and, after them, the rapid intervention of the people who were watching him. More than an hour later, after making a gesture of greeting to Strappetti, lying in bed in his room on the second floor of the House of Santa Marta, the Pope fell into a coma. He did not suffer, everything happened quickly, says those who were with him in those last moments.

A sudden, almost unexpected death, without any prolongation or sensational outcry, for a Pope who always kept his health very secret. A death that occurred the day after Easter, the day after he had blessed Rome and the world, the day after the last embrace of the people, after a long time. He, who from the first moments of his election, on March 13, 2013, had promised them a journey “together”…/ Vatican Radio
