More than 30 children were reunited with their families in Ukraine this weekend after a lengthy operation to bring them home from Russia or Crimea, said to have been 'abducted' by Russian forces during the war.
As can be seen in the video published by Reuters, the images that have made the rounds of the network touch hearts. Mothers fondly hug their children as they cross the border from Belarus to Ukraine on Friday after a complex rescue mission that involved traveling across four countries.
Dasha Rakk, a 13-year-old girl, said she and her twin sister had agreed to leave the Russian-occupied city of Kherson last year because of the war and go to a holiday camp in Crimea for several weeks. According to her, the Russian officials had decided that the children should stay longer.
"They said that we will be adopted, and that we will have guardians. When we were first told that we would be staying longer, we all started crying. ", said the little girl. Dasha's mother Natalia said she had traveled from Ukraine to Crimea via Poland, Belarus and Moscow to pick up her daughters. Ukraine's Crimean peninsula has been occupied by Russia since 2014.
"It was terribly difficult, but we kept walking, we didn't sleep at night, we slept sitting up. It was heartbreaking to see the children left behind crying behind the fence,” she said, describing her journey to the camp. Kiev estimates that around 19,500 children have been sent to Russia or Russian-occupied Crimea since Moscow's takeover in February last year, in what it condemns as illegal deportations. Moscow, which controls parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, denies abducting the children and says they were transported for their safety.
