The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, during her stay in Skopje, gave a speech in the Assembly of North Macedonia. Von Der Leyen said to the Macedonian deputies that North Macedonia now has the opportunity to stay together with the EU.
However, during her speech, there were disputes from the opposition MPs. There was a whistle that blew and some banners were thrown.
"I thank you for this democratic behavior", said the EC President.
She further emphasized that she has listened carefully to the concerns about the language, but said that "the Macedonian language is your language and will not be affected in this process."
After this statement, the deputies of the majority stood up and applauded, while there were disputes from those of the opposition.
The Assembly of North Macedonia has gathered this Thursday for the French proposal for the settlement of disputes with Bulgaria, a process that would pave the way for the start of EU membership talks.
This issue is the only item on the agenda. The French proposal consists of two separate documents, the EU Council conclusions and the negotiating framework.
If North Macedonia accepts the French proposal, the bilateral protocol with Bulgaria will also have to be signed, while it is required that the Bulgarians be included in the Constitution after the first intergovernmental conference and the official opening of negotiations, but before the opening of the first cluster.
