Ukraine's richest man promises to rebuild Mariupol

Ukraine's richest man has pledged to help rebuild the besieged city of Mariupol, a country he loves, where he owns two major steel factories that he says will compete globally again.

Rinat Akhmetov has seen his business empire destroyed by eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine, but remains defiant and confident that what he calls "our brave soldiers", will protect the city that lies on the shores of the Sea of Azov, already reduced to a desert, by seven weeks of shelling.

At the moment, his company Metinvest, Ukraine's largest steel producer, has announced that it cannot meet obligations based on supply contracts.

"Mariupol is a global tragedy and a global example of heroism. For me, Mariupoli has always been and will always be a Ukrainian city," Mr. Akhmetov said in a written response to questions directed by the Reuters agency.

"I believe our brave soldiers will protect the city, although I understand how difficult it is for them" he said, adding that he was in daily contact with Metinvest managers who run the Azovstal and Illich Iron&Steel Works factories in Mariupol.

On Friday, Metinvest said it would not operate under russian occupation and that the Mariupol siege had disabled more than a third of the capacity of metallurgy production in Ukraine.

Mr Akhmetov praised President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's "passion and professionalism" during the war, which was apparently saw as a softening of relations between them after the Ukrainian leader last year said plotters hoping to topple his government had tried to include the businessman himself.

At the time, Mr Akhmetov called the accusation "totally a lie".

"War is certainly not a period for disagreement... We will rebuild all of Ukraine," he said, adding that he had returned to Ukraine on February 23 and had not left since then.
