A senior American official has issued a stern warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He has said that if Netanyahu allows the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas to fail, he will face severe consequences from US President Donald Trump.

The news was reported by Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

Speaking in Hebrew to Channel 12, Axios correspondent Barak Ravid said the US official had warned him that Netanyahu was "walking a fine line with President Trump."

"If he keeps this up, he will end up breaking the deal, and if he breaks it, Donald Trump will retaliate," the official added.

The official also told Ravid that US Vice President JD Vance was shocked by developments in Israel.

According to him, Vance, who wrapped up a diplomatic visit to the country earlier on Thursday, was surprised to hear that the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, had given preliminary approval on Wednesday to two non-binding bills related to the annexation of parts of the West Bank.

Speaking at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport before his departure, Vance criticized the vote, saying: "If this was a political stunt, it's a big mistake. I personally feel offended."

An Israeli official also told Channel 12 that Netanyahu had been warned several days earlier about the backlash that would follow the vote, but did nothing to prevent it.

The Israeli parliament approved two annexation-related bills in a preliminary reading. Both bills must pass three additional readings to become law.

The vote came despite opposition from Trump, who said last month he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, while Netanyahu has blamed the opposition.
