Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will have two police officers stationed in cells next to him while he is in prison to ensure nothing bad happens to him, France's interior minister has said.

Sarkozy arrived at La Santé prison in Paris on Tuesday to begin a five-year sentence after being convicted of conspiring to raise campaign funds from Libya. The sentence is considered a shocking setback for a man who led the country between 2007 and 2012.

Terror against Sarkozy

A video circulating widely on social media shows the moments when former French President Nicolas Sarkozy becomes the target of threats from his fellow prisoners, despite the security measures taken against him.

In the video, prisoners can be heard shouting, insulting and threatening Sarkozy, calling him by name at night with the aim of not letting him sleep.

Just a day earlier, three prisoners were detained after another video was released, also containing threats against the former president.

The Paris prosecutor's office has confirmed the seizure of two mobile phones and has opened an investigation into threats to the life of Nicolas Sarkozy, who is being investigated by French police.

Will be protected by the police

On Wednesday, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez told Europe 1 radio that two police officers from the security unit that protects former presidents will be permanently stationed in neighboring cells for the duration of Sarkozy's imprisonment.

"The former president of the republic is entitled to protection by virtue of his status. There is clearly a threat against him, and this protection is being maintained while he is in custody," Nuñez said. He added that officers would remain with Sarkozy "for as long as necessary."

According to French media, the officers will be part of a team that will work in shifts inside the prison.

Sarkozy will be held in the La Santé isolation unit, where prisoners are held in single cells and kept separate during ventilation, meaning he will not have contact with other prisoners.

Prison guard unions protested against the police presence inside the prison.

Nicolas Peyrin, from the CGT union, said that La Santé staff are fully capable of guaranteeing the safety of prisoners and that the police are not needed. "There is no point in taking concrete measures," he told BFM television.

Uilfried Fonck, head of another prison guards' union, told RTL radio that they are essentially being told they don't know how to do their job. "They are essentially telling us that we don't know how to do our job."

Sarkozy's lawyers have filed a request for his early release, pending an appeal of the conviction, and said they expect the request to be considered within about a month. They expressed confidence that he could be released on parole by Christmas.
