Iran has threatened through secret diplomatic channels the oil-rich Gulf states and other US allies in the Middle East if their territories or airspace are used for an attack on Iran, Arab officials said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Arab officials note that countries Iran has threatened include Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, all of which have US troop bases.

These countries have told the Biden administration that they do not want their military infrastructure or airspace to be used by the US or Israel for any offensive operations against Iran, the officials said, the Wall Street Journal quoted.

While the Iranian threats are vague, they have raised concerns in the energy-rich Gulf states that their oil facilities - long considered protected by a US security umbrella - could be hit, Arab officials said.

US military installations and forces in the region could also be at risk in a region with one of the highest concentrations of US troops in the world, they added.

US defense officials acknowledged that some regional partners have told the Pentagon they do not want Israeli warplanes to fly over their territories or US troops to launch offensive operations from within or over their airspace.

The Arab countries' requests remain informal, a US defense official said. Since the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza began last year, Arab countries have repeatedly added and lifted restrictions on US operations, defense officials said.

But those countries were safer as the war between Israel and Iran widened, including Israeli attacks on Lebanon, officials said, the Wall Street Journal reported.
