The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was switched to standby and emergency power supply generators, a local official installed by Russia in the part of the region controlled by Moscow said on Monday.

Vladimir Rogov said the power plant had been "completely" cut off from external power supply after Ukraine cut a power line controlling it.

Russia seized the six-reactor nuclear power plant, which is Europe's largest, in the early days of the war.

Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom also said there is a power outage at the plant.

Anatoliy Kurtev, secretary of Zaporizhzhia city council in Ukraine, said work was continuing as of early Monday to restore power to the city.

Mr. Kurtev wrote on Telegram: "(Energy) partially disappeared in Zaporizhzhia due to an emergency situation at one of the energy facilities."

Throughout the war, nuclear experts and the UN nuclear watchdog have raised concerns about military presence and activity in the region.

They have been warning for months about the risk of a major power plant accident and safety after shelling caused temporary power outages.
