Fires in Greece

One of the biggest fires in Greece, the one in Evros, has been extinguished after 16 days.

A total of 582 firefighters with 16 infantry divisions and 129 vehicles as well as 9 airplanes and 8 helicopters from the air were engaged in this area in the fight against the flames.

Help in dealing with the fires was provided by the European Civil Protection Mechanism with forces from France, Spain, Cyprus, Romania, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Slovakia, as well as through transnational agreements from Albania and Serbia.

But the fire managed to cause enormous damage by burning 35 thousand hectares, forests, bushes and fruit trees.

Firefighters continue to be on standby in this area to identify and extinguish smaller fires.

The fires this season are considered the most destructive in the history of Greece, burning about 150 thousand hectares in total.
