French President Emmanuel Macron is facing fierce criticism after he announced the restriction of social networks in France.

According to Macron, social networks were used as tools to incite violence and unrest during the protests that erupted after the killing of an Algerian teenager by police.

Elysée officials and government ministers have insisted that Macron is not deciding on a permanent social media blackout but a temporary suspension until protests and riots in several French cities end.

"We have to think about how young people use social networks, in the family, at school. There should be bans on these... and when things get out of control, we will have to fix them or stop them," Macron said in a meeting with several mayors.

The French president's stance comes shortly after ministers blamed young people using social media such as Snapchat and TikTok for organizing and encouraging violent protests in France.
