Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron

The occupation of the nuclear power plant in Ukraine's Zaporizhia by Russian forces is the cause of the dangers that have been created, French President Emmanuel Macron said during his telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin.

The French president asked Putin to withdraw from the nuclear power plant and respect the instructions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to restore safety conditions, according to the press release of the French Presidency.

During the telephone conversation, Emmanuel Macron "condemned the continuation of Russian military operations in Ukraine and reiterated his demand to end them as soon as possible, to start negotiations and to restore the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."

Emmanuel Macron also discussed with Putin the issue of global food security and reminded him that "European sanctions do not apply to agricultural products or to products necessary for agriculture", while also asking the Russian president to guarantee the implementation of the agreement on the export of cereals to ensure the supply of those who are most in need.

Moscow, on the other hand, said its exports of agricultural products and fertilizers are still hampered by Western sanctions, while Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that most of Ukraine's exports go to Europe and not poor countries.
