The state of Antigua and Barbuda announces that it will hold a referendum on whether or not to declare itself a republic, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The news was given by Prime Minister Gaston Brown, who added that the referendum could be organized within 2-3 years, while not considering the decision as a hostile act by the monarchy.
He made these comments after Charles III was proclaimed king of the United Kingdom.
In addition to the United Kingdom, Charles III is recognized as the 14 other countries that were colonies of Great Britain in the past.
Antigua and Barbuda is an independent Commonwealth country comprising 2 large islands and several smaller ones. Positioned where the Atlantic and the Caribbean meet, it is known for its reef-filled beaches, rainforests and resorts.
