Sophie of Wessex, wife and countess of Prince Edward, was visibly devastated by the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Daily Mail writes that the queen and her 57-year-old daughter-in-law have always been very close, even to the extent that she called her "mom" on several occasions. A source close to the royal family has told the English media that Sophie is known at court as "the queen's favorite bride".

According to the Daily Mail, after the death of her mother Mary Rhys-Jones 17 years ago, Sophie saw the royals as members of her own family. Prince Edward and Sophie were the first to visit the Queen after his death.
They are said to have been "like mother and daughter" in recent years. "There was a lot of love and mutual respect in that relationship," the source added.

Sophie and Edward met in 1987. They married 6 years later and have two children, Louise and James. Sophie is best known for her charity work and advocates for the rights of people with special needs and women's rights.
Before marrying Edward, Sophie appeared on the cover of tabloid The Sun, which published a topless photo of her. She was accompanied by her colleague Chris Tarrant, pictured during a business trip to Spain in 1988.

Buckingham Palace and then Prime Minister Tony Blair condemned the move. The tabloid, which obtained the photo from Kara Noble, her former friend, later apologized. They published the text "Sophie, Sorry" on the cover and donated all proceeds from the sale of this issue to charity.
