Residents in Kranidi and Leonidio on the Peloponnese peninsula were awakened by a powerful 4.8-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake occurred at 7:20 am in the marine area between Kranid and Leonidios, specifically 16 km northeast of Leonidios in the Argolic Gulf, at a depth of 14.5 km.

According to the data of the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake was also felt throughout the valley of Athens.

"It is about an area that does not have frequent seismic activity, although there are large structures and fractures, but we will see the evolution of the phenomenon", declared the head of the Planning and Earthquake Protection Organization Efthimios Lekkas, adding that, still we don't know if this is the main earthquake, it's early, it's hard to say yet."

Also, he announced that so far there have been no reports of damage to people or buildings.

Other specialists have pointed out that there was seismic activity in the area and that the new data will be evaluated in the following hours, as there is a possibility that this structure will produce other more powerful earthquakes.
