At least 12 people have died in one of southern Spain's biggest wildfires, local officials said on Friday, as tragic stories emerge of victims' attempts to escape the blaze.

More than 460 emergency workers have been deployed to fight the fire near the town of Los Gallardos on the Costa de Almería, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said on Friday. At least 1,405 residents had been evacuated from their homes, said Antonio Sanz, the health and emergencies minister for the region, which is popular with tourists.

"The most destructive fire to date in our region," he said.

At least eight people were injured, four of them seriously, Grande-Marlaska said.

Andalusia's regional leader, Juanma Moreno, said earlier on Friday that at least 23 people were missing, but Grande-Marlaska later suggested that these figures were preliminary and that officials had received three official reports of missing persons.

Temperature records have been broken across Europe this summer, as countries have been hit by heatwaves that are bringing alarmingly extreme temperatures early in the year. Firefighters are battling wildfires in Spain, Portugal and France.

Sanz said some victims tried to escape the flames via a dry riverbed, which turned out to be a deadly “trap.” Four people died in a vehicle, while seven others were killed while trying to escape the fire on foot, he said.

"Everything suggests that the victims were mainly, if not entirely, foreign nationals, although of course this cannot be confirmed until their identities are officially determined," Sanz said.

Grande-Marlaska later confirmed that some of the dead were foreign nationals.

Some relatives of the missing took to social media to share their concerns as authorities search for the missing and seek to identify the deceased victims.

A woman living in the United States posted on X that her brother was missing after trying to escape the fire through a valley with a group of 10 people. Meanwhile, another woman said on Facebook that she had been unable to contact her parents after they said they were evacuating on Thursday.
