Iran-Israel conflict/ Chancellor Merz maintains a clear stance: Solution through
Friedrich Merz

In the military conflict between Israel and Iran, neither side seems willing to break the spiral of violence.

The German Chancellor gives a clear message.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on Iran to "immediately" cease attacks on civilian targets in Israel.

At the same time, he reaffirmed Germany's position that the Islamic Republic "must not develop or possess nuclear weapons."

"It would be a threat to Israel, the Middle East and the international community as a whole," the chancellor declared in Berlin before leaving for the G7 summit in Canada.

The heads of state and government of the Group of Seven major industrialized democratic nations will meet there.

Israel has the right to "protect the existence and security of its citizens," Merzi stressed.

"This issue will be very high on the agenda of the G7 summit."

The Chancellor stressed that the conflict must not spread: “Other countries in the region must not become a battlefield.”

Therefore, a solution must now be sought through diplomatic means. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is in close contact with counterparts in the region to achieve this.

Merzi himself called the Sultan of Oman, thanking him for his mediation efforts to end the nuclear program.

The chancellor further announced: "In Germany, we are also preparing in case Iran decides to attack Israeli or Jewish targets in our country."

Israel plans to "change reality in the Middle East"

The fight against Iran and its nuclear program is not just about defending the country, Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog stressed.

"Our goal is to change the reality in the Middle East," he said during a visit to the city of Bat Yam, in central Israel.

Several people were killed there in Iranian missile attacks overnight.

"It cannot be that the Evil Empire continues to launch missiles and develop nuclear capabilities, which represent the most dangerous threat to humanity," Herzog stressed.

Therefore, Israel is not only defending itself, “but also the Middle East, humanity itself and world peace,” according to the Israeli president. He called on the G7 heads of state and government to stand by Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced retaliation in Bat Yam. “Iran will pay a high price for the deliberate killing of civilians, women and children,” Netanyahu declared. “Think about what would happen if Iran had nuclear weapons that it could launch against Israeli cities,” the Israeli prime minister added.

Reports of many dead and hundreds injured

Since Friday night, Israel has attacked multiple targets in Iran, including nuclear and military facilities.

The Islamic Republic responded with counterattacks. According to media reports, at least 138 people have been killed in Iran since Friday, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists.

Hundreds of people are said to have been injured. According to official figures, at least 13 people have been killed and around 400 others injured in Israel since the attacks began.

Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian warned that his country's response to the attacks would be "more determined and harsh" if Israel's "hostile actions" continued. So far, the Iranian military has responded "decisively and appropriately."

Iranian radio reported explosions on Sunday near Tehran's Mehrabad Airport and north of the capital. The Israeli military said more than 80 targets in Tehran were attacked overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Air raid alerts were raised again Sunday in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and elsewhere. Israeli airspace remains closed "for security reasons." There are no flights taking off or landing at Ben Gurion International Airport./DW
