The European Parliament said on Monday it has started a procedure to lift the immunity of two of its members following a request by Belgian justice investigating a corruption scandal between the European Union and Qatar.
Two sources close to the investigation told the Reuters agency that the two MEPs are Belgian Marc Tarabella and Italian Andrea Cozzolino.
"Following a request from the Belgian judicial authorities, I have launched an urgent procedure to lift the immunity of two members of the European Parliament," said Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Twitter.
"There will be no impunity for anyone," she said.
Mr. Tarabella's lawyer, Maxim Toller, said his client was in favor of waiving immunity. Earlier, MEP Tarabella denied any wrongdoing, saying in a statement that he had "absolutely nothing to hide" and "will answer all the questions of the investigators".
Mr. Cozzolino did not respond to Reuters' attempts for comment. Last month, he told Italian news agencies that he was not under investigation at the time. "I was not interrogated. I have not been checked, nor has my office been closed," he said then.
In December, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Francesco Giorgi, one of the main suspects in the investigation, along with his partner, ousted European Parliament vice-president Eva Kaili, admitted to taking bribes. from Qatar to influence the decisions of the European Parliament regarding Qatar.
According to the sources, Mr Giorgi, an adviser in the EU parliament, said he suspected MEPs Tarabella and Cozzolino had received money from Qatar. Mrs. Kaili has denied violating the law.
Reuters could not confirm whether Mr Giorgi had provided any evidence for his allegations against MEPs Tarabella and Cozzolino.
On December 22, a Belgian judge ordered Ms Kaili to remain in custody for another month as the investigation continues into the corruption case involving World Cup host Qatar in one of the country's biggest corruption scandals hit the EU.
Ms. Kaili, who is Greek, is also accused of taking bribes from Qatar. She declared earlier through her lawyer that she is innocent.
