Record cocaine seized in Spain
13 tons of drugs hidden in banana containers are seized

Spanish police have seized 13 tons of drugs in the southern port of Algeciras.

The narcotic substance was hidden in several cargoes of bananas in a container that came from Ecuador and was to be distributed in Europe.

"It is already known that 13 tons of cocaine were not intended only for the Spanish market. This country cannot afford such a large quantity of drugs. This drug was intended to be distributed throughout Europe," said Antonio Martinez, police chief.

The signal was given by Ecuador. Spanish police were then put on high alert as a suspicious shipment was expected to land there.

This is the largest amount of cocaine ever seized in Spain and breaks the previous record when 9.4 tons of cocaine were found in 2023, also in Algeciras, Europe's fourth largest container port.
