Not just with weapons: Another US-Iran "war"

The use of cryptocurrencies in Iran is growing rapidly as citizens and institutions try to circumvent harsh economic sanctions imposed by the United States. This has created a new confrontation between Tehran and Washington, who are playing a “cat and mouse game” in the digital financial world.

According to data, the cryptocurrency ecosystem in Iran has reached over $7.78 billion over the past year, growing at a rapid pace.

Cryptocurrencies are being used not only by citizens to protect their savings from inflation and devaluation of the local currency, but also by state structures to conduct international transactions outside the traditional banking system, Aljazeera reports.

Reports indicate that much of the activity is linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is suspected of using cryptocurrencies to sell oil, buy goods, and finance other activities, circumventing international restrictions.

On the other hand, the US has increased the pressure by targeting Iran-linked networks in this sector. American authorities have frozen hundreds of millions of dollars in digital assets and imposed sanctions on platforms suspected of helping Tehran evade economic restrictions.

Meanwhile, for ordinary Iranian citizens, cryptocurrencies remain a lifeline to preserve the value of income in an economy hit hard by inflation and currency depreciation.

However, state controls, internet outages, and the risks of cyberattacks make this market increasingly insecure.
