Presidential election fails, Kosovo goes to the polls again

Kosovo's parliament has failed to elect a president and the country will head to another snap election.

Due to the lack of a quorum, the president was not elected. In the sessions held to elect the president, only Albin Kurti's deputies were present, but not those from the opposition.

Tuesday was the last day, based on the Constitutional Court's decision, to elect the president.

"We tried everything," said Kurti, who listed a series of offers he had made to the opposition.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo has also reacted, assessing that with the end of the constitutional deadline for electing the President, one of the most serious violations of the Constitution and a dangerous attempt for Kosovo's democracy has been avoided.

"Attempts to impose a unilateral process outside the constitutional framework failed. The institutions of the Republic and the constitutional order were protected," the PDK response states.

Within 45 days, Kosovo must hold elections, which are expected to take place around the beginning of June.

These will be the fifth elections since last year.
