Japan, the example of energy saving

Europe should take lessons from Japan to cope with the energy crisis, so begins the article of the World Economic Forum, which brings the example of Japan as a guiding model for Europe.

In March 2011, Japan was hit by an earthquake and a very powerful tsunami that resulted in a nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. The power production capacity of the Nuclear Power Plant dropped by 40% as the country took energy saving measures.

Shopping malls turned off their elevators, businesses turned off their lights during the evening, and the Ministry of the Environment introduced a plan to turn off printers in the middle of work to reduce energy use by 25%.

Employees were asked to take their drinks from home to turn off the refrigerated vending machines and were also asked to dress in light colors to minimize the use of air conditioners.

Sports events such as baseball or football matches were played during the afternoon hours, thus avoiding the evening hours and the need for lighting. Auto manufacturing companies rearranged their work schedules and installed solar panels, thus using alternative energy sources.

These are just some of the examples that are listed in the article of the World Economic Forum as a model from Japan for Europe in coping with the Energy Crisis.
