Donald Trump's son, Eric, has recounted the moment when his father was assassinated by a 20-year-old. He said that he was watching it on TV with his small children, while for a moment he could not believe what he was seeing on the screen.
Eric, 40, recalled the terrifying experience during an interview with NBC's Savannah Guthrie on Monday night as Trump and his supporters gathered at the Republican National Convention just 48 hours after the failed assassination attempt.
"Two days ago, I was on the couch with my kids watching my dad almost get killed on national television," Eric said of the moment he saw the gunshots ring out during Trump's rally in Butler on Saturday night.
Eric has a son, Luke, 6, and a daughter, Carolina, 4, with his wife, Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump.
"I saw it live ... I can clearly hear the sound of a bullet, and I heard the shots and my eyes went to the TV and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing," he added.
"You immediately see the blood, you immediately see somebody on the ground and you don't know if they've been hit multiple times, and you're just praying to God that they're going to get up. We have this feeling of fear when it's an unknown person and not when it's a family member, it's terrible," he said.
Would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, fired several shots with an AR-style rifle from about 130 yards from the podium where Trump, 78, was addressing the crowd.
A bullet grazed the former president's ear – damaging part of his skull. "He has a bad earache," Eric said of his father's injury. "At least we knew he could move at that point," he added as he watched his bloodied father rise and show his fist in the air seconds after the bullet grazed the former US president.
"These are not good times," he complained. "This cannot happen in this country." Despite the trauma of the shooting — which killed one rally attendee and seriously injured two others — Eric revealed that his father insisted on showing up to the RNC as planned.
"I spoke with him 45 minutes after the assassination and he told me: "Nothing changes with the congress, I will be there", he recalls. Trump initially planned to delay his trip to the key state after the assassination attempt, but later announced he would be there on the schedule he had previously said.
