Former Putin supporter ends up in psychiatric hospital after suddenly turning

Two days ago, Ilya Remeslo, once an ardent supporter of Vladimir Putin, appeared to change his stance and become a harsh critic of the Russian president, even demanding that he be brought to justice for war crimes.

The St. Petersburg newspaper Fontanka reported that the 42-year-old lawyer had been taken to the city's No. 3 Psychiatric Clinic, citing a source within the health facility. Reuters was unable to contact Remeslon himself or determine how he ended up in the hospital.

A woman who answered the hospital's phone number confirmed to the international news agency that a person with the same first name, middle name and last name as Remeslo had been admitted to the clinic. The employee, who declined to give her identity, said she had no information on the time of the admission or the reasons for it.

Remeslo built his career denouncing Putin's critics, until he became one himself. Among other things, he wrote that Putin is waging a "failed war" in Ukraine, which has caused millions of casualties and severely damaged the Russian economy at the expense of the well-being of its citizens.

"Vladimir Putin is not a legitimate president. He must resign and face justice as a war criminal and a thief," Remeslo wrote in a post.

This sudden change of attitude surprised the Russians, and apparently cost them dearly.
