US officials have detected unidentified drones over a military base in Washington where Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth live, according to a report by the Washington Post, citing sources briefed on the situation.
According to three people familiar with the developments, authorities have not yet determined the origin of these drones.
The incidents have been recorded at Fort Lesley J. McNair base, where several drones have been spotted in a single night over the past 10 days, prompting increased security measures and a meeting at the White House to discuss the response.
The incident comes at a time of heightened tensions as the United States and Israel continue strikes against Iran. According to a senior administration official, the US military has intensified threat monitoring due to the high alert level.
In parallel, the US has issued a global alert for the security of diplomatic missions abroad and has strengthened measures at several bases within the US. Important bases such as Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey and MacDill Air Force Base in Florida have raised the security level to "Charlie", signaling a possible risk of attack.
The drone incidents have prompted authorities to consider moving Rubio and Hegseth off the base, although an administration official confirmed that they have not been moved.
