US "softens" on Iran after oil price hike

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that Washington is considering the possibility of lifting some sanctions on Iranian oil in an effort to keep energy prices under control on global markets.

In an interview with Fox Business, he stressed that such a step could directly affect the approximately 140 million barrels of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea, turning them into active supply for the market.

Asked about concerns that such a decision could benefit US adversaries, Scott Bessent said that the strategy aims to use this situation in favor of economic stability.

"We will use Iranian barrels against the Iranians," he said, underlining that the objective is to lower prices for consumers, at least in the short term, over the next 10-14 days.

This approach comes at a time when international energy markets are under pressure and the US is looking for alternative ways to avoid further increases in fuel prices.
