Famous Albanian former mafia boss becomes municipal councilor in the US

John Alite, a former mafioso of Albanian origin who was once one of the most trusted men of famous crime bosses like John Gotti, has now become a city councilor in the city of Englishtown, New Jersey.

The former Gambino crime family "soldier," who was once convicted of six murders and dozens of violent assaults, was sworn in as a member of the City Council on Wednesday, taking an unexpected turn in his life.

"I had a dark past, but now I want to make amends and end my life doing positive things," said 62-year-old Alite.

Known as one of the Gambino clan's most successful "cashiers" during the '80s and '90s, Alite believes his street experience will also help him in politics.

“Every aspect of the road is like government, so I understand the political maneuvering and intrigue well,” he added.

Alite, who spent 14 years in prison and later became an FBI witness against his former friend John Gotti Jr., has been involved in social work to help young people get off the streets. This earned him the trust of Englishtown Mayor Daniel Francisco, who nominated him for the council position.

Although there was initial opposition from some council members, Alite managed to convince them that his past could serve as an example for change and positive recovery.

“I don't shy away from my past. On the contrary, I use it to influence young people and turn a negative story into a life lesson,” he said.

Alite will hold this position until 2027, unless someone challenges him in the elections until March 21. However, he believes he has enough support to continue in politics and does not rule out the possibility of a higher candidacy, even for the US Congress.

"I've been asked about a higher political position and I like Trump's model, he does what he needs to do and he's a great worker," said Alite, who has been a supporter of the former president since 2016.

Despite his criminal past and ongoing conflict with the Gotti family, Alite has now become a motivational speaker, author of five books on mafia life, and anti-drug activist.
