A Brazilian woman who trained as a police officer to catch her father's killer has finally fulfilled her promise after 25 years of waiting.
Gislayne Silva de Deus was only nine years old when her father, Givaldo, was killed over a $66 debt. She had promised herself that she would find the perpetrator and bring justice to her father's murder.
In 1999, the killer, Raimundo Gomes, shot Givaldo in the head after an argument in a bar and escaped. Despite numerous attempts to locate him, Gomes was not arrested and his case was filed. But for Givaldo's daughter, who was the eldest of five sisters, the matter was never closed.
Determined to get justice for her family, Gislayne studied law and later became a police officer in 2023. After joining the police, she asked to be assigned to the homicide section to find her father's killer.
After a long search, finally in September 2024, Gislayne and her team managed to find and arrest Gomes in Boa Vista, a city in the north of Brazil, in the state of Roraima. Seeing him face to face for the first time, Gislayne, now 36, told Gomes: "You're here because of me and now you're going to pay for what you've done."
For Gislayne and her family, this moment was liberating. "With his arrest, I have cleansed my soul and that of my entire family. Today we have peace and the feeling that justice has finally been done."
Gislayne told Brazilian media that when he saw Gomes in handcuffs, he couldn't hold back the tears. "It was an outpouring of emotions that turned into tears of relief, as it seemed like this day would never come," she said.
Her story is an incredible example of the determination and strength to seek justice for lost loved ones, showing that the pursuit of justice may take time, but in the end justice triumphs.
