A Turkish court today ordered the detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu pending his trial on two separate charges, corruption and "terrorism", Turkish media reported.

This decision is expected to trigger even larger protests than those that have taken place in many major cities in Turkey over the past four days.

The mayor of Ankara, who also belongs to the Republican People's Party (CHP) like Imamoglu, called the decision a "shame" for the country's judicial system.

The decision to send Imamoglu, who is considered President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's staunchest opponent, to prison was made despite accusations from the Republican People's Party (CHP) and European leaders that the charges against him are politically motivated.

The Turkish court said Imamoglu and at least 20 others were detained as part of a corruption investigation. There is no separate report yet on the investigation into the Istanbul mayor for “terrorism.”

Turkish prosecutors have asked the court to hold Imamoglu and his four associates pending trial, as previously announced by the Istanbul mayor's office, with him categorically denying the allegations of corruption and links to the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party), describing them as "unthinkable", "baseless" and "immoral".

The approval of the prosecutor's proposal means that Imamoglu will be removed from office, as legislation in Turkey allows the government to appoint someone else in his place.
