Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reacted to US President-elect Donald Trump 's statement to rename the Gulf of Mexico " Gulf of America ."

In a sarcastic response, Sheinbaum suggested that North America be called, " Mexican America ."

Sheinbaum's comments came after Trump's sensational statements, such as the unification of Canada with the US, taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal.

At her daily press conference, Sheinbaum stood in front of a colonial-era map of the region from 1607 and proposed that North America should be renamed “América Mexicana,” or “Mexican America,” after a founding document dating from 1814 that preceded Mexico’s constitution referred to it that way.

" That sounds nice, doesn't it? " she said sarcastically.
