Donika Gërvalla

The Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, has asked the European Union (EU) on Friday to lift Serbia's status as a candidate country, after the attack on the Kosovo Police by an armed group of Serbs in the north of the country last month.

Gërvalla made these comments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Berlin Process in Tirana, where the European Union Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, and the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerboc, also participated.

The Kosovo Police was attacked by an armed group of Serbs in the village of Banjské, in the municipality of Zveçan on September 24, where Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku was killed. In the ensuing fighting in the village monastery, three Serb attackers were killed.

Serbia has rejected Kosovo's accusations that it is behind the attack described by the Kosovo authorities as an "attempt to annex the north of Kosovo".

However, Gërvalla said that "the smallest measure that should be taken is the freezing of the status of the candidate country for the European Union for Serbia."

Serbia received the status of a candidate to join the EU in 2012, a year after the talks between it and Kosovo on the normalization of relations began. Kosovo applied for this status in December 2022.

"In this situation that was created after September 24, nothing can continue with the old avaza. It is impossible because we have to ensure the safety of the citizens. We have to see how the international community will behave in relation to Serbia. Will he get the deserved response for aggression or not? Then it may be time to sit down and discuss calmly. Today is not the moment to discuss the association", said Gërvalla.

The responsibility for the attack in Banjska was taken by Millan Radoicic, the former chairman of Lista Serbe, the main party of Serbs in Kosovo that has the support of Belgrade.

On October 3, Radoiçiçi was arrested, interrogated and ordered to be held in police custody for up to 48 hours, before being released a day later, but without a passport and barred from going to Kosovo.

Part of the gathering in Tirana was also the Foreign Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, who in the end did not even participate in the official photograph of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Berlin Process.

When asked by journalists if he refused to participate because of the Kosovo flag next to other flags, he answered briefly: "Yes".

Gërvalla said that Kosovo's trouble with Serbia is bigger than not participating in a joint photo.

Asked about Dacic's attitude during the ministerial meeting, the Kosovar diplomat said: "I did not expect any constructive speech from Dacic about the Berlin process, because in order to prevent it, Serbia has fought hard to have an initiative like the Open Balkans, which joined you in others, but now it is only because it was only the 'Trojan Horse' that was destined to destroy the idea of cooperation initiated by Germany".

Regarding the representation of Kosovo at the Berlin Process summit that will be held in Tirana on October 16, Gërvalla said that he cannot confirm whether Prime Minister Albin Kurti or President Vjosa Osmani will participate, saying that the decision belongs to the institutions. /REL
