The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement (EUROPOL) announces that during raids carried out on October 5 in Brazil, members of the criminal organization 'Primeiro Comando da Capital' led by a Serb were captured. This organization trafficked cocaine between Brazil and Europe
"The Serbian leader was one of the most important targets of the Europol Task Force that deals with the Balkan drug traffickers 'OTF Balkan Cartel' because of his role in organizing numerous drug shipments between continents," the published communiqué states. on Friday from EUROPOL.
The investigation was a cooperative effort between law enforcement authorities on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
"Brazilian investigators were able to catch this criminal gang with two recent cocaine seizures: one of 5.7 tons of cocaine on board a fishing vessel in Cape Verde in April 2022 and the second shipment of 1.3 tons of cocaine on board a fishing vessel in Fortaleza, Brazil, in August 2022. In these two cases, a total of 12 suspects were arrested - 10 Brazilian citizens and 2 Montenegrin citizens," the EUROPOL communiqué further states.
The European Law Enforcement Agency has been successful in the fight against criminal organizations since it managed to decrypt the Sky messaging app - ECC, a preferred means of communication for cocaine traffickers in Europe.
In May of this year, an international operation carried out by Serbia, the Netherlands and Belgium resulted in the bust of the largest criminal drug trafficking organization in the Balkan region.
EUROPOL's May 11 communique stated that the purpose of the raids was "to capture the leader of the cartel and to destroy the distribution infrastructure. Seven other members of this criminal organization were arrested in Belgium in 2021."
Also in May, the New York Times Sunday magazine published a long article detailing crimes committed by the gang of Veljko Belivuk, the head of the Partizan Belgrade football team's fan group, whose capture also it became possible after the Sky-ECC application messages were discovered. The alleged links between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Belivuk gang were also discussed there.
Shortly after the publication of the article in the New York Times, the author of the text Robert F. Worth told VOA that European agents are “still investigating the messages that they have deciphered. So I think there are many more that have not been reported yet."
"These arrests in Brazil mark an important victory in the fight against Western Balkan criminal groups operating around the globe," said Friday's EUROPOL communiqué.
"Evidence gathered during the raids will now be analyzed to identify new investigative leads that can be further developed within the 'Balkan Cartel' Operational Task Force, which is made up of law enforcement authorities in 11 countries," it reads at the end of communicator.
The authorities that participated in this investigation were the Federal Police and the Brazilian Navy, the National Police in Cape Verde, the Criminal Police Directorate of Serbia, the British National Crime Agency (NCA), the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and EUROPOL.
