Thousands of firefighters on the ground, flames are spreading rapidly

For the third day in a row, France is battling the country's biggest wildfire in nearly 80 years.

Firefighters are focused on the southern Aude region, with flames covering an area larger than Paris.

Dozens of homes have been destroyed so far, forcing residents and tourists to evacuate. Many roads are closed.

According to preliminary information, over 16 thousand hectares have been burned by the terrible fire.

One person has died in Saint Laurent De La Cabrerisse (Son Loron de la Cabreris), three are missing and several others are injured.

The flames are spreading very quickly and 2,000 firefighters are engaged in this area.

Thousands of families suffer from lack of electricity.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, in a reaction to this emergency, said that it is the largest area burned by a single fire in France since 1949.

Residents say everything looks like the apocalypse.

The fire, about 100 kilometers from the border with Spain, started on Tuesday and is growing in size. Scientists say hotter, drier summers in the Mediterranean region make it more vulnerable to fires.

France's meteorological office has warned of a new heatwave that will begin in other parts of southern France on Friday and is expected to last for several days.
