Successive earthquakes in Santorini have prompted Greek authorities to take action.
The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilia, announced in an interview that a new evacuation port will be built which will serve to anchor ferries that will carry residents in the event of an earthquake.
"Along with the new port in Santorini that is being prepared, there has been a decision to establish an evacuation port where passenger ferries can dock in case of emergency."
The Minister emphasized that there is a possibility of a larger earthquake in the region, which makes continuous vigilance and timely preparation necessary.
"A major earthquake could cause major damage or even a tsunami. Residents of Santorini and surrounding islands should know that, in the event of a major earthquake, they should immediately evacuate coastal areas."
The Aegean island, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations, has been shaken by thousands of earthquakes since late January, forcing thousands of people to flee and authorities to close schools.
