German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was in Washington on Friday for his first visit to the White House.
During the meeting, Merz presented President Donald Trump with a copy of the birth certificate of Trump's German-born grandfather, inviting the American leader to visit his ancestral lands.
Born in 1869 in what was then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, Friedrich Trump grew up in Kallstadt, a village hidden in the lush vineyard valleys surrounding the Rhine River, south of Frankfurt.
Trump's paternal grandmother, Elisabeth, was born across the street from Trump's home in Kallstadt in 1880.
Merz held a first phone call with Trump shortly after taking office in early May, during which he said he had invited the president to visit Germany, an invitation he has now made public.
Trump's grandfather came from a humble family, one of six children of a winegrower. After school, he learned the barber's trade.
In 1885, at the age of 16, he left his homeland in the hope of a better life in the United States of America. It was a time when more than 100,000 Germans were taking the road of exile with the dream of a better life.
He later sought to return to Kallstadt, but local officials refused to grant him permission, citing a failure to properly deregister when he left in 1885.
Friedrich, who later changed his name to Frederick, and his wife Elisabeth boarded a ship bound for the US in 1905, and Trump's father was born in New York just a few months later.

Donald Trump's grandfather, after arriving in New York, began life in the western part of the US, later entering the gold trade and buying property, thus laying the foundation for the future wealth of the Trump dynasty.
While Friedrich died there in 1918, Elisabeth would go on to live a long life before passing away in 1966.

Kallstadt first gained international fame during Trump's first presidential bid in 2016, when the media turned their attention to the village of just over 1,000 residents after his victory. Kallstadt attracts people from all over the world every year for its summer festival.
