Egypt presents new proposal to restore Gaza ceasefire

Egypt presented a new proposal last week to restore the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

According to Reuters, the proposal was drafted after Israel last week resumed its air and ground operations against Hamas in the Palestinian enclave, effectively ending the fragile ceasefire agreement that had been in place since January 19.

The Egyptian plan calls for Hamas to release five Israeli hostages each week, with Israel implementing the second phase of the agreed ceasefire.

Both the US and Hamas have accepted the proposal, but Israel has yet to respond. The Egyptian proposal includes a deadline for the release of all hostages in exchange for a deadline for Israel's full withdrawal from Gaza.

Hamas accuses Israel of violating the terms of the ceasefire agreement, but has said it is open to negotiations and is considering a proposal by US envoy Steve Witkoff.
